In a significant move aimed at enhancing the integrity of the criminal justice system, Mary Chrzanowski, a former Macomb County Circuit Court judge, has been appointed as the new chief of the Macomb County Prosecutor's Conviction Integrity Unit. Chrzanowski's appointment comes as the unit continues its vital work in reviewing cases where convicted individuals claim innocence.
The Conviction Integrity Unit, established in 2022 by Prosecutor Pete Lucido, plays a crucial role in ensuring that every conviction is accurate, fair, and supported by the evidence. Chrzanowski's appointment marks a continuation of the unit's mission, building upon the foundation laid by its previous leader, Gail Pamukov, who retired in May.
In her new role, Chrzanowski will oversee the unit's operations, which include reviewing claims of innocence, examining newly discovered evidence, and working to ensure that convictions are legally sound and factually accurate. "I am deeply honored that Prosecutor Lucido has entrusted me with this responsibility," Chrzanowski said. "The integrity of our criminal justice system depends on public confidence that every conviction is accurate, fair, and supported by the evidence. I look forward to building on the outstanding foundation established by Ms. Pamukov and working to ensure justice is faithfully served."
Under Pamukov's leadership, the unit achieved a notable milestone by exonerating Mack Howell, a wrongful conviction case that garnered significant attention. The unit also secured a $1.6 million federal grant to expand post-conviction DNA reviews, underscoring its commitment to thorough and comprehensive investigations.
Prior to her appointment as chief, Chrzanowski worked as an assistant Macomb County prosecutor in the early 1990s. She then served as a Circuit Court judge for 24 years, demonstrating her dedication to the legal profession and commitment to fairness. In 2020, Chrzanowski ran as a Democrat against incumbent Republican Prosecutor Lucido, seeking to replace former Macomb County prosecutor Eric Smith, who was forced out of office following a financial scandal.
"The integrity of our criminal justice system depends on public confidence that every conviction is accurate, fair, and supported by the evidence. I look forward to building on the outstanding foundation established by Ms. Pamukov and working to ensure justice is faithfully served," Chrzanowski emphasized.
Judge Chrzanowski's extensive judicial experience, coupled with her sound judgment and commitment to fairness, make her an exceptional choice to lead the Conviction Integrity Unit. Prosecutor Lucido echoed these sentiments, stating, "Judge Chrzanowski's decades of judicial experience, sound judgment, and commitment to fairness make her exceptionally well suited to lead the Conviction Integrity Unit. She is a welcome addition to help us protect the integrity of the justice system."
The Conviction Integrity Unit's work is of paramount importance, as it helps to ensure that innocent individuals are not wrongfully convicted and that the justice system remains just and fair. With Chrzanowski at the helm, the unit is poised to continue its vital work and contribute to the ongoing efforts to improve the criminal justice system.
The appointment of Mary Chrzanowski as the new chief of the Macomb County Prosecutor's Conviction Integrity Unit represents a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to enhance the integrity of the criminal justice system. Her experience, dedication, and commitment to fairness make her an ideal leader for this crucial unit, and her appointment is a testament to the importance of justice and accountability in our society.
