Megan Hanni, who serves as the principal of the School for Agricultural and Environmental Studies within the Waupun Area School District, has been named the 2026 Principal of the Year by the Wisconsin Rural Schools Alliance. The prestigious statewide accolade highlights her exemplary commitment to educational innovation, institutional leadership, and the continuous enhancement of student achievement across rural learning environments.

The annual award presented by the Wisconsin Rural Schools Alliance recognizes school leaders who demonstrate exceptional dedication to their school communities. According to district and community announcements, Hanni was selected for her proactive efforts to expand educational horizons for children while maintaining an unwavering focus on academic growth and community-centered leadership.

Under Hanni’s direction, the School for Agricultural and Environmental Studies—widely referred to by its acronym, SAGES—has established a strong record of academic excellence. The institution recently earned an "Exceeds Expectations" accountability rating on official school report cards issued by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. This state-level performance metric reflects significant student academic progress, high performance levels, and consistent closing of achievement gaps within the public school framework.

State education metrics underscore the effectiveness of the unique instructional strategies deployed at SAGES. Rather than relying solely on conventional instructional pathways, Hanni and her staff have merged rigorous academic standards with specialized, nature-centered pedagogy, demonstrating that unconventional educational models can produce outstanding academic outcomes.

Central to the school's success is a learning philosophy that breaks away from traditional classroom confines. Faculty and administrators at SAGES operate under the guiding motto that "walls are optional," emphasizing that meaningful instruction can take place anywhere and that the natural world provides a vibrant environment for intellectual inquiry.

To facilitate this immersive approach, the school leverages an expansive collection of outdoor and hands-on educational facilities. Students frequently engage in educational activities across a dedicated 48-acre school forest, utilizing outdoor classroom spaces that transform environmental study from an abstract concept into a tangible, day-to-day experience.

The learning perimeter extends well into the local geography of the region. Through planned field studies, students conduct educational work at prominent regional landmarks, including Fox Lake and the Horicon Marsh, where they examine wetlands, monitor local wildlife habitats, and observe complex regional ecosystems firsthand.

Back on the school grounds, practical life sciences and agricultural practices form an essential part of the curriculum. SAGES features active school gardens and a working chicken coop, both of which serve as operational learning labs. In these settings, children take direct responsibility for agricultural tasks, connecting elementary biology with practical food production, animal care, and environmental stewardship.

The school’s day-to-day instructional design is anchored in the foundational belief that "Little Kids Can Do Big Things." Through immersive project-based learning modules, students are empowered to undertake substantive research tasks. Elementary learners are trained to systematically study regional ecosystems, gather empirical data, cultivate crops, and observe life cycles within living outdoor classrooms.

This specialized environmental and agricultural curriculum is structured to connect theoretical knowledge with practical, real-world utility. By linking standard grade-level requirements with data collection in forests, wetlands, and gardens, the school fosters critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a lasting appreciation for environmental sustainability at an early age.

Hanni’s leadership style has drawn high praise from district leadership. In nominating her for the statewide honor, Waupun Area School District Administrator Steven K. Hill highlighted her visionary mindset and her ability to bring out the best in both staff and students in a rural educational setting.

"Megan Hanni is the kind of principal rural education needs more of," Hill wrote in his nomination endorsement. "One who sees possibilities where others see limitations, who builds teams that believe in each other, and who keeps students at the center of every decision."

Colleagues and district leaders note that Hanni's collaborative approach has fostered an environment where teachers feel empowered to design innovative outdoor curricula while ensuring that every child receives individualized attention tailored to their developmental and academic needs.

The formal presentation of the award will take place in late autumn. Hanni will be officially recognized before educators, school board members, and community leaders from across the state during the Wisconsin Rural Schools Alliance conference luncheon, scheduled for October 29 at the Stevens Point Convention Center.

The statewide recognition of Hanni’s leadership shines a bright spotlight on the Waupun Area School District and underscores the transformative potential of rural education. Through creative outdoor initiatives, rigorous academic standards, and strong team building, SAGES continues to stand as a model for rural schools aiming to blend local heritage with academic excellence.
