Volusia County Voters to Decide Between Daytona Beach Shores and 'The Shores' on Upcoming Ballot

Electors in the coastal Volusia County municipality of Daytona Beach Shores are preparing to resolve a defining question regarding their civic identity, as voters face a formal decision on whether to preserve the city's established name or officially rebrand simply as "The Shores." The municipal referendum brings civic nomenclature to the forefront of the local ballot, offering residents a direct say in shaping the public profile and future marketing of their oceanfront community.

While local ballots will not feature any contested City Commission candidate races during this election cycle, the single question regarding the town's official designation has emerged as a focal point for the electorate. Rather than weighing the platforms of competing political candidates, registered voters will cast their ballots strictly on whether their municipal government and geographic area should remain designated as Daytona Beach Shores or transition to the streamlined alternative of The Shores.

The proposed name adjustment reflects ongoing discussions regarding municipal branding, community identity, and regional distinctiveness. For decades, the barrier island municipality has sought to balance its shared heritage and name recognition with neighboring Daytona Beach while simultaneously cultivating a distinct identity centered on its own residential neighborhoods, beachfront amenities, and coastal hospitality sector.

The physical setting of Daytona Beach Shores has long played a central role in shaping its community atmosphere and attracting regional visitors. Framed by scenic sea oats that line the Atlantic sand dunes, the city's wide oceanfront beaches regularly draw substantial crowds of residents and vacationers who gather along the water, offering expansive views looking southward along the bustling Atlantic coastline.

A defining element of the city's physical and urban development is the dense wall of high-rise condominiums standing along State Road A1A. This distinct oceanfront skyline developed significantly during the construction waves of the 1970s and 1980s, building upon an initial foundation of residential and commercial coastal properties that first began emerging in the municipality during the early 1960s.

The community's mid-century lodging history remains well-preserved in state historical records, chronicling the post-war tourism boom that transformed the area into a premier seaside destination. Historic venues such as Perry's Ocean Edge Beach Motel, featured in Florida State Library postcard collections dating back to the 1970s, offered guests expansive sunny lawns and shady palm trees that defined the classic Florida beachside experience.

Among the city's most enduring and recognizable coastal landmarks is the historic Sunglow Pier, which held its grand opening on June 4, 1960. At the time of its debut, the impressive 1,200-foot-long ocean structure was widely celebrated as the finest and longest steel pier along Florida's east coast, quickly establishing itself as a prominent gathering spot for local anglers, sightseers, and coastal travelers.

Over the decades, the Sunglow Pier complex—also known as the home of the popular oceanfront eatery Crabby Joe's Deck & Grill—has stood as a testament to the community's maritime culture while weathering the severe impacts of coastal weather. The vulnerability of seaside landmarks was demonstrated in late September 2022, when severe surf generated by Tropical Storm Ian sheared off a major portion of the privately owned pier, prompting ongoing restoration considerations.

In addition to traditional pier attractions and leisure resorts, the city has maintained a notable athletic legacy on the water, hosting major international ocean competitions. In 1981, Daytona Beach Shores served as the backdrop for the Hobie 18 World Championship, an event documented by state commerce archives that saw colorful catamarans lined up along the sand before launching into competitive races on the Atlantic waters.

The municipality's culinary landscape has likewise drawn high-profile attention, contributing to the city's modern regional profile. In 2022, celebrity television host Guy Fieri visited Daytona Beach Shores to film a segment for the program "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" at Millie's Restaurant and Catering, featuring restaurant owner Chris Chibarro and spotlighting the city's local dining scene for a nationwide audience.

Daytona Beach Shores has also occasionally served as a venue for national political figures and diplomatic figures during key moments in political history. In 1986, future President Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden met with prominent Democratic fundraiser and future U.S. Caribbean ambassador Bill Crotty, alongside his daughter Kathleen Crotty, during a visit to the city's Treasure Island resort.

As voters weigh the referendum, the debate balances respect for local heritage against the desire for a more modern, distinctive municipal image. Proponents of adopting "The Shores" often point to the clarity and concise nature of the name, emphasizing separation from larger neighboring jurisdictions, while supporters of Daytona Beach Shores point to decades of established tradition, name equity, and historical recognition.

With the election approaching, Daytona Beach Shores stands at an important crossroads in determining its public image and administrative identity. Whether the community chooses to maintain its longstanding historical title or adopt a fresh moniker, the upcoming vote provides residents with the ultimate authority to define the legacy and future branding of their coastal town.
