School Buses Back on the Road: Washington State Emphasizes Stop-for-Bus Laws

As students across Washington State gear up for another academic year, school transportation teams are working diligently to ensure the safety of young passengers. With the start of the school year comes a renewed emphasis on the importance of adhering to stop-for-bus laws, particularly in light of recent statistics that highlight the prevalence of illegal passes.

According to a survey released by the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS), school bus drivers in Washington documented 960 illegal passes during a one-day survey. If this rate were to persist throughout the entire school year, it would amount to more than 172,000 violations, according to the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI).

The law in Washington State is clear: drivers must stop for school buses when they are flashing red lights or displaying a retractable stop sign. This rule applies on two-lane roads, where drivers traveling in both directions must come to a complete halt. On roads with three or more marked lanes, the requirement to stop applies only to drivers traveling in the opposite direction. However, drivers traveling in the same direction as the bus must always stop.

The consequences of ignoring this law are severe. Drivers who are caught illegally passing a stopped school bus face a mandatory fine of $500, which cannot be waived, reduced, or suspended. This strict penalty underscores the importance of following the rules to protect the safety of students.

Gastonia Police Department has joined the effort to promote awareness of these laws, as they work to ensure the safety of all students who rely on school buses for transportation. With the return of school, the department is reminding drivers to be vigilant and to exercise caution when they see a school bus stopped with its flashing red lights activated.

"We want to make sure that every student gets to and from school safely," said a representative from the Gastonia Police Department. "Illegal passes are a significant risk factor in school bus accidents, and we want to do everything we can to prevent these tragic incidents."

In addition to the legal penalties, there are also significant safety risks associated with illegal passes. When drivers fail to stop for school buses, they risk causing serious accidents that could injure or even kill students, teachers, and bus drivers. These incidents can also cause considerable property damage and disrupt the daily routines of schools and families.

The NASDPTS survey serves as a stark reminder of the importance of enforcing stop-for-bus laws. As the organization's president noted, "The safety of our children is paramount, and we must all do our part to ensure that they are protected while traveling to and from school."

To help drivers understand the different scenarios for stopping for buses, the Gastonia Police Department has provided the following guidelines:

- On a two-lane road, drivers traveling in both directions must stop when the bus's flashing red lights or retractable stop sign are activated. - On roads with three or more marked lanes, drivers traveling in the opposite direction are not required to stop. The same exception applies to highways divided into separate roadways. However, drivers traveling in the same direction as the bus must always stop.

By following these guidelines and exercising caution when encountering a stopped school bus, drivers can help create a safer environment for all students and school staff.
