Texas Railroad Commission Nominee Bo French Faces Bipartisan Backlash Over Xenophobic Remarks on UT Austin Crowd

A sharp political confrontation has erupted within the Texas Republican Party after Bo French, the GOP nominee for Texas Railroad Commissioner, ignited widespread controversy with inflammatory social media posts targeting South Asian students celebrating a college football victory in Austin. The remarks quickly drew severe rebukes from prominent Republican figures, including outgoing United States Senator John Cornyn and top leaders in the Texas House of Representatives.

The controversy originated following a major college football matchup on Saturday night at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin. The Texas Longhorns staged an electrifying comeback to secure a monumental victory over the top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. As the final whistle blew, a jubilant atmosphere swept through the venue, with thousands of collegiate supporters cheering inside the stadium.

While Longhorns supporters across the nation celebrated the marquee triumph, French, viewing the broadcast from his television screen at home, expressed open hostility toward the demographics of the student section visible on the telecast.

Early Sunday morning, French took to social media to publish a photograph capturing a group of ecstatic students celebrating in the stands, taken either late in the fourth quarter or immediately following the game's conclusion. In the image, many of the celebrating young people appeared to be of South Asian ancestry, a visual that prompted French to voice discontent.

Accompanying the shared image, French questioned the demographic composition of the university community. He stated that he had previously heard reports that the University of Texas graduation ceremony looked similar this year but had not believed it at the time. He asserted to his followers that the situation had grown considerably worse than anyone had anticipated.

In subsequent comments beneath his initial post, French expanded on his criticism by attacking the university's enrollment policies. He alleged that individuals resembling those pictured were being systematically favored by college admissions offices, claiming that academic institutions were actively prioritizing foreign individuals over homegrown Texans.

Approximately one hour after his initial statement, French escalated the rhetoric by sharing the stadium photograph a second time. In this follow-up post, he drew an analogy to law enforcement technology, claiming that just as body cameras have exposed criminal activity, social media is currently revealing the extent to which Americans are being displaced by foreigners across the country.

The nominee's statements sparked immediate condemnation from high-ranking members of his own party, leading to a public dispute with veteran Texas lawmaker Sen. John Cornyn. The outgoing senator took to the social media platform X on Sunday to forcefully repudiate French’s rhetoric.

Cornyn pointed out that French is the official Republican nominee for a prominent statewide office and challenged fellow party members to confront the divisive rhetoric. In his post, the senator asked whether other elected Republican officials would openly condemn such intolerance and racism or merely look the other way as such views become normalized. Cornyn warned that permitting these attitudes to spread is precisely how major political organizations experience internal decline and self-destruct.

The pushback against French extended rapidly to legislative leadership within the state Capitol. Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows publicly called on French to delete the offensive online statements on Sunday. Similar demands for removal were issued by Republican State Representatives Jeff Leach and Lacey Hull, further underscoring the discomfort among state lawmakers regarding the nominee's rhetoric.

Rather than retracting his statements or defusing the escalating intraparty tension, French remained combative and launched a direct counterattack against Cornyn on X shortly after the senator published his critique.

In his rebuttal, French accused establishment figures of undermining state institutions, alleging that colleges and public entities have been overrun by foreign nationals and undocumented immigrants due to the actions of moderate Republicans. French specifically labeled Cornyn a "RINO" (Republican in Name Only) and asserted that critics who oppose his stance are aligned with what he described as an "America Last" agenda. French insisted that these opponents are simply frustrated that Texas Republicans are moving toward an "America First" posture.

The dispute following the football game represents the latest in a series of controversial episodes involving French, who previously served as the chairman of the Tarrant County Republican Party. Over recent months, the nominee has repeatedly made polarizing public statements concerning minority and religious communities.

Earlier in March, French drew heavy criticism from within the Texas GOP after making hostile comments regarding Islam. During those appearances, French argued that the Muslim faith would infiltrate and conquer the state of Texas, ultimately advocating for the deportation of American Muslims. Those prior remarks had similarly triggered condemnations across the state party structure.

The latest clash highlights persistent ideological fissures among Texas Republicans as candidates campaign for statewide office. With leading lawmakers continuing to demand accountability, French's repeated attacks on university students and religious minorities have placed party unity and rhetoric under intense scrutiny.
