Texas Couple Goes Viral With Theatrical Engagement Photoshoot Inside Houston H-E-B

In a uniquely Texan celebration of romance, Houston residents Cara DeGaish and David Quiroz transformed the aisles of a local supermarket into the stage for their engagement portraits, sparking widespread attention across social media platforms. The couple chose the unconventional grocery setting to honor their shared personal histories and artistic backgrounds, charming viewers across the state.

The photo series captured widespread attention after DeGaish shared images of Quiroz’s proposal on her personal Instagram account on September 3. Within less than a week, the social media post gained notable traction, accumulating upwards of 3,000 likes alongside dozens of congratulatory messages by September 9.

The sudden surge of online enthusiasm caught the newly engaged couple completely off guard. Addressing the widespread digital reaction to their retail photo session, DeGaish admitted that neither she, her fiancé, nor their creative team anticipated that the portraits would resonate so broadly with the public or take off in the manner that they did.

The creative photoshoot took place inside the prominent H-E-B branch located off Bunker Hill Road, formally addressed at 9710 Katy Freeway in Houston. Photographer Miranda Zaebst was behind the camera, specifically framing the shoot to highlight the couple’s background in musical theater alongside their mutual appreciation for the beloved supermarket institution.

For DeGaish and Quiroz, picking the San Antonio-headquartered grocery chain was far from an arbitrary novelty or a random retail backdrop. Instead, the well-known Texas supermarket brand had established a lasting presence and held deeply personal significance in the separate lives of both individuals long before their paths originally crossed.

Quiroz’s connection to the regional grocery giant is rooted directly in his collegiate employment history. While balancing his academic studies during his undergraduate years, he spent time working inside the chain's retail operations, serving on the store floor as an assistant store manager.

DeGaish’s personal history with the brand extends back even further into her formative childhood and teenage years in South Texas. Growing up in the coastal community of Portland, situated just across the Nueces Bay Causeway from Corpus Christi, the neighborhood grocery store served as an everyday landmark in her youth.

During high school, DeGaish lived roughly ten minutes away from the Portland location, regularly spending free time walking through the aisles. Reflecting on those memories, she explained that while massive city superstores in places like Houston can occasionally feel overwhelming or stressful for shoppers, smaller community stores of her youth always represented a familiar, safe, and deeply nostalgic environment.

The couple's romantic journey originally began in Huntsville, Texas, where both were enrolled as musical theater majors at Sam Houston State University. The university’s specialized performing arts curriculum provided the common ground where the two performers would first encounter each other.

Because the university's musical theater division was notably compact, maintaining an intimate cohort of only about 10 to 15 students, incoming peers stood out quickly. DeGaish recalled taking immediate note of Quiroz the first time he entered their shared classroom, finding him exceptionally handsome and determining right away that she wanted to get to know him.

Despite that early spark of curiosity, their very first verbal interaction did not unfold like a conventional theatrical romance. According to DeGaish, their initial encounter occurred unexpectedly while both students were heading toward their parked vehicles across a campus parking lot.

Noticing Quiroz walking approximately 40 feet ahead of her, DeGaish decided to introduce herself, calling out across the pavement to say hello and mention that they had not yet formally met. Quiroz turned around, offered a brief introduction in return, and promptly continued walking an additional 20 feet away from her.

As DeGaish later learned, Quiroz had his own distinct reasoning for the brisk parking lot exchange. From his perspective at the time, he brushed off the greeting under the suspicion that her overt friendliness was disingenuous, believing that no stranger could realistically be that exceptionally pleasant upon an initial meeting.

The brief distance between the two classmates began to dissolve several months later when their academic and artistic paths converged again. Approximately seven months following their parking lot encounter, both DeGaish and Quiroz were simultaneously cast in a campus production of the musical *Hands on a Hard Body*.

Working together on the stage production helped foster the connection that eventually led to their engagement years later. Through Zaebst’s photography, the couple brought their relationship full circle, blending their passion for the stage with the aisles of the Texas grocery chain that accompanied both of their lives.
