Pediatrician Annie Andrews Outlines Health, Economic, and Foreign Policy Priorities in South Carolina Senate Race

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — Dr. Annie Andrews, the Democratic nominee vying for South Carolina’s open seat in the United States Senate, is centering her campaign on health care reform, cost-of-living relief, and pragmatic governance. As the general election approaches, the Charleston physician is presenting her clinical background as the cornerstone of her readiness to tackle federal policy challenges on behalf of working families.

Speaking in an interview with News 2 anchor Carolyn Murray in Mount Pleasant, Andrews argued that her professional career treating young patients offers direct insight into the socioeconomic pressures confronting everyday citizens. Having spent two decades navigating pediatric care in hospital settings, she maintained that witnessing how policy decisions reverberate through family households offers unmatched preparation for the responsibilities of the legislative branch.

At the forefront of her policy platform is a resolute defense of public health funding. Andrews identified halting impending reductions to Medicaid budgets as her absolute top legislative priority in Washington. She warned that cutting resources for the program would generate damaging ripple effects across South Carolina’s medical infrastructure, threatening the stability of hospitals and depriving vulnerable patients and households of essential care.

Expanding on her health care vision, the Democratic candidate endorsed a comprehensive strategy aimed at making medical treatment more accessible and affordable throughout the state. Her agenda includes adopting Medicaid expansion in South Carolina, restoring subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, and implementing measures to lower the costs of prescription medications. Andrews emphasized that the overarching medical system must undergo a structural shift to prioritize patient outcomes rather than corporate profits.

Beyond medical reform, Andrews directed attention to the broader financial pressures facing household budgets, emphasizing the strain created by elevated prices for everyday necessities. She noted that working families across the state are grappling with mounting expenses for child care, rising grocery receipts, and volatile energy costs, all of which require immediate and practical policy remedies from lawmakers.

To address immediate pocketbook pain, Andrews proposed targeted tax relief at the pump. She called for a temporary suspension of gasoline and diesel excise taxes at both the state and federal levels, contending that halting these fuel levies provides immediate, tangible financial breathing room for commuters and commercial drivers navigating current economic challenges.

The candidate also addressed the state's expanding industrial and digital landscape, taking a clear stance on the surge of data center developments across South Carolina. Andrews proposed a statewide two-year moratorium on breaking ground for new data center infrastructure, arguing that local municipalities need time and leverage while federal regulators work to establish comprehensive standards for the industry.

Andrews indicated that pausing the rapid rollout of massive technological facilities is necessary to protect local interests. In her view, municipal governments need greater bargaining power when entering negotiations with major corporations, ensuring that communities are not overburdened or left at a disadvantage as industrial-scale technology projects proliferate.

On international relations and national security, Andrews articulated a critical stance regarding American foreign entanglements, specifically voicing concern over U.S. military involvement in Iran. She characterized finding a diplomatic resolution and securing an orderly exit from the conflict in Iran as the country’s most pressing foreign policy and security challenge.

Addressing political labeling from opponents, Andrews firmly rejected assertions that she aligns with democratic socialism. Instead, the Senate hopeful defined her political philosophy as that of a pragmatic, center-left problem solver who prioritizes functional solutions over ideological rigidity.

As part of her commitment to institutional reform, Andrews signaled her support for establishing term limits for members of Congress. She pledged to foster bipartisan cooperation on Capitol Hill, arguing that legislative progress requires lawmakers who are willing to bridge partisan divides to deliver results for their constituents.

Anchoring her candidacy in both her domestic and professional life, Andrews presented herself as an everyday stakeholder in the state's future. She highlighted her identity as a mother raising three children within the Charleston County public school system, alongside her twenty years on the front lines of what she described as an overburdened and fractured national health care system.

The campaign has grown increasingly competitive as Andrews challenges interim U.S. Sen. Darline Graham for the full Senate term. In response to Andrews' policy rollouts, the Graham campaign has intensified its scrutiny by launching "Annie’s Waiting Room," an interactive, game-style digital platform created to highlight Andrews' public statements and policy stances for voters seeking a centralized review of her record.

With the campaign entering its final phase, South Carolina voters will evaluate these contrasting visions for the economy, health care, and foreign policy when they cast their ballots between Andrews and Graham in the Nov. 3 general election.
