Michigan Gas Prices Surge 28 Cents in One Week as Pump Costs Climb Across the State

Motorists across Michigan are facing a sharp increase at the fuel pump this week following a sudden and substantial jump in retail gasoline prices. According to new data released Monday by AAA-The Auto Group, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel in the state escalated by 28 cents over the span of just seven days, bringing the statewide benchmark to $4.31 per gallon.

The rapid price increase represents a significant upward shift for Michigan drivers compared to recent pricing trends. The current $4.31 per gallon mark sits 6 cents higher than the statewide average recorded just one month ago. When compared to the same period last year, the increase is even more pronounced, with Michigan drivers now paying $1.04 more per gallon than they did twelve months prior.

This dramatic weekly spike has directly increased the out-of-pocket expenses required for everyday travel throughout the state. AAA calculated that filling a standard 15-gallon vehicle fuel tank in Michigan now costs drivers an average of approximately $65. This current filling cost represents a notable increase of about $14 when compared to the highest price levels recorded in August 2025.

The upward pricing pressure observed in Michigan comes amid a broader rise in fuel costs across the United States. National data published on Monday by the fuel-tracking service GasBuddy showed that the nationwide average price of gasoline climbed to $4.25 per gallon. That figure reflects a 15.7-cent increase over the course of the previous week, indicating that pump price volatility is affecting motorists well beyond state borders.

Within Michigan, metropolitan regions have mirrored this sharp climb, with the Detroit area recording substantial adjustments at local filling stations. A comprehensive survey of 1,734 gas stations across the city conducted by the Dallas-based tracking firm GasBuddy revealed that Detroit's average price rose by 22 cents over the past week, settling at roughly $4.30 per gallon.

Auto club AAA corroborated the rising figures for the region, noting that Metro Detroit's daily gas price average experienced a marked rise compared to the previous week. According to AAA's regional tracking, Metro Detroit's average reached $4.30 per gallon, reflecting an increase of approximately 19 cents from the week before and standing $1.12 higher than the pricing recorded during the identical timeframe last year.

Addressing the sudden market shift, AAA spokesperson Adrienne Woodland highlighted that the statewide cost of fuel has reached thresholds not observed by consumers in several weeks. Woodland noted that Michigan motorists are contending with a considerable rise at the pump, with prices escalating to levels that had not been recorded since early August.

Woodland explained that the rapid price movement reflects broader instability affecting the energy sector as a whole. According to the auto club representative, the sharp increase emphasizes the ongoing volatility present in global oil markets while serving as an important indicator of just how rapidly retail fuel prices can fluctuate for regular consumers.

The steep price increases at the retail level occurred alongside mixed underlying fundamentals within domestic energy markets, as revealed by figures from the Energy Information Administration. Data from the federal agency, cited by AAA in its weekly market evaluation, outlined notable shifts in production, demand, and inventory volumes across the country.

On the supply side, domestic refinery output experienced a noticeable downturn during the reporting period. The Energy Information Administration reported that total domestic gasoline production fell from 9.8 million barrels per day down to 9.3 million barrels per day, marking a substantial reduction in the volume of fuel being refined.

Concurrently, overall consumer demand for gasoline also contracted across the nation. According to the federal agency's findings, domestic demand dropped from 8.92 million barrels per day to 8.55 million barrels per day, demonstrating that the price spikes took place despite a measurable decline in daily fuel consumption by American motorists.

Despite the reduction in refinery production, overall commercial inventories of finished gasoline managed a modest increase. Domestic gasoline supply reserves rose slightly from 205.7 million barrels to 206.9 million barrels, according to the data gathered by the Energy Information Administration and highlighted in the auto club's report.

Across Michigan's various regional markets, pump prices exhibited substantial variation, with certain metropolitan areas bearing higher expenses than others. AAA's regional price breakdown identified Ann Arbor and Jackson as having the highest gas price averages in the state, with both areas recording an average of $4.35 per gallon. Lansing followed closely behind as one of the state's most expensive markets, averaging $4.34 per gallon.

Conversely, several areas in the state registered prices below the overall Michigan average of $4.31 per gallon. The least expensive average gas price was recorded in Traverse City, where drivers paid an average of $4.22 per gallon. Flint followed with an average of $4.27 per gallon, while the Metro Detroit area tied for the third least expensive regional average at $4.30 per gallon.

The collective data from both AAA and GasBuddy illustrates a challenging environment for Michigan motorists, who must navigate sudden double-digit price increases alongside long-term gains that place fuel costs substantially above last year's rates. As refinery production declines and global market volatility continues, drivers across the state remain subject to rapid changes in their weekly commuting expenses.
