Major I-10 Ramp in Northwest San Antonio Closes Permanently as Part of Loop 1604 Expansion Project

Commuters traveling through northwest San Antonio are facing significant adjustments to their daily routes as state transportation officials proceed with a permanent ramp closure. The Texas Department of Transportation has announced that a heavily utilized access point connecting local drivers to Interstate 10 will be taken out of service permanently to accommodate extensive highway upgrades in the area.

Starting Monday, September 14, at 5:00 a.m., the eastbound Interstate 10 entrance ramp located just south of the Loop 1604 interchange is scheduled to close for good. Transportation authorities are alerting motorists throughout the region that this major modification is likely to generate substantial delays that could persist for several months as construction continues in full force.

The ramp shutdown is set to directly impact multiple high-volume commercial and educational destinations across the northwest corridor. In particular, shoppers and employees leaving The Shops at La Cantera, visitors traveling around The Rim commercial center, and university community members heading toward UT San Antonio and UTSA Boulevard will need to modify their regular commuting habits.

According to official statements from the Texas Department of Transportation, the permanent decommissioning of the ramp is a necessary step to allow construction crews to carry out vital future roadway enhancements. While the closure eliminates a familiar access route, the agency indicated that travelers can anticipate the introduction of a newly constructed exit ramp scheduled to open later this year.

To help mitigate the impact of the closure on daily traffic patterns, state highway officials have outlined several dedicated detour options tailored to different starting points around the busy intersection. Commuters are encouraged to familiarize themselves with these alternate routes before setting out on their journeys.

For motorists navigating the eastbound Interstate 10 frontage road, the agency instructs drivers to remain on the frontage lanes and proceed straight through both the UTSA Boulevard and Hausman Road intersections. Drivers can subsequently merge onto the eastbound Interstate 10 main lanes by using the entrance ramp situated south of Hausman Road.

Drivers attempting to reach eastbound Interstate 10 from the eastbound Loop 1604 frontage road will need to follow a multi-step detour route. Transportation officials advise these motorists to take the eastbound-to-westbound Loop 1604 U-turn at the Interstate 10 interchange and merge onto the westbound Loop 1604 frontage road.

From there, drivers should follow the westbound Loop 1604 frontage road to the turnaround at Kyle Seale Parkway, navigate the U-turn, and proceed onto the eastbound Loop 1604 frontage road. Travelers must then take the initial available entrance ramp to enter the eastbound Loop 1604 main lanes, keeping to the right-hand lane to connect to eastbound Interstate 10 via the elevated flyover ramp.

A separate routing plan has been established for travelers seeking to transition from westbound Loop 1604 onto eastbound Interstate 10. Officials recommend that these commuters follow the eastbound Loop 1604 frontage road through the Interstate 10 interchange until reaching the U-turn at Northwest Military Highway.

After completing the U-turn onto the westbound Loop 1604 frontage road, motorists should take the first entrance ramp to access the westbound Loop 1604 main lanes. Drivers must remain in the right lane to utilize the direct flyover connector leading onto eastbound Interstate 10.

This ramp modification represents an integral component of the ongoing Loop 1604 North Expansion Project, a massive $1.4 billion infrastructure endeavor. The undertaking encompasses extensive roadway improvements stretching across a 23-mile corridor from State Highway 16, also known as Bandera Road, to Interstate 35.

The overarching mission of the expansion project is to dramatically improve traffic flow, ease persistent bottlenecking, and bolster motorist safety along what has become recognized as one of the state's most congested thoroughfares. By reconfiguring ramps, interchanges, and main lanes, state engineers aim to accommodate the region's expanding transportation demands.

State highway planners note that the multi-billion-dollar project operates within the broader framework of the Texas Clear Lanes program. This statewide initiative, spearheaded by the Texas Transportation Commission, is specifically designed to target and alleviate severe traffic congestion in key metropolitan sectors across Texas.

While immediate disruptions will require patience and route planning from local drivers, the comprehensive modernization of the Loop 1604 corridor is designed to provide long-term relief for regional transit. The complete expansion project is currently projected to reach full completion in 2028.
