Law enforcement personnel from multiple agencies have resumed an active, on-the-ground search in Leonidas Township as part of an ongoing multi-year investigation into the disappearance of Brittany Shank. Shank, a Sturgis resident who was 23 years old when she vanished late in 2018, remains the focus of one of the most prominent unsolved cases in the region.
The latest field activity focused heavily on an open property situated off Onley Road, where investigators concentrated their efforts around an underground structure. Officials initiated the targeted excavation and inspection after receiving an investigative tip that directed authorities to the specific rural location.
Addressing the operational activity at the scene, St. Joseph County Undersheriff Dave Northrup explained that law enforcement is handling the newly received information according to standard investigative protocols. Northrup noted that deputies and investigators are treating this specific lead in the same manner as every other tip received throughout the history of the case.
Undersheriff Northrup emphasized the overarching responsibility law enforcement holds toward the local population, stressing the importance of resolving long-standing community concerns. He explained that a critical objective of the inquiry is determining the precise nature of what happened to Shank, specifically whether her sudden disappearance was the result of criminal foul play or stemmed from an accidental event.
Despite the visible presence of personnel and equipment conducting extensive checks in the area, authorities have been careful to temper public expectations regarding the operation. Investigators underscored that such searches are a routine and necessary component of following up on leads, making clear that the current activity does not signify confirmed new evidence or a definitive breakthrough.
The case has persisted for years as one of St. Joseph County’s longest-running active missing persons investigations. Law enforcement officials, alongside Shank's family, have continuously sought answers regarding her whereabouts since the initial report of her disappearance.
To assist with the specialized demands of the scene, the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office partnered with the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Detroit Field Office. Personnel wearing FBI jackets were observed conducting search operations across the field off Onley Road alongside county investigators.
Federal involvement in the operation includes the deployment of technical assets and specialized personnel, including members of the FBI’s Evidence Response Team. These teams provide local law enforcement with specialized forensic capabilities, equipment, and scene-processing expertise necessary to evaluate underground structures and rural terrain.
In a formal statement regarding the joint operation, Jennifer Runyan, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Detroit Field Office, highlighted the significance of allocating comprehensive investigative resources to active missing person cases. Runyan noted that whenever an individual is missing, every accessible asset must be leveraged to assist local authorities in their search efforts.
Runyan further articulated the bureau's commitment to standing alongside local partner agencies, stating that federal personnel are dedicated to delivering the necessary technical resources and professional expertise. She affirmed that these collaborative efforts are ultimately aimed at supporting the ongoing work of local investigators and providing answers to families who continue to wait for news of their loved ones.
The extensive search efforts trace back to the evening of November 30, 2018, when Shank was last seen following a single-vehicle incident in St. Joseph County. At approximately 9:00 p.m. that night, Shank’s vehicle was involved in a crash, ending up in a ditch in the vicinity of Fawn River Road.
Circumstances surrounding the hours leading up to the vehicle collision have remained a focal point of the investigation. Family members reported that earlier that same evening, Shank had been seen in the company of an unidentified man prior to traveling toward Fawn River Road.
Shortly after the vehicle came to rest in the ditch, Shank managed to reach a nearby residence in the area, where she placed an emergency phone call to 911 dispatchers. However, immediately after contacting emergency services from the home, Shank fled the location under circumstances that remain unexplained.
The final confirmed sighting of the 23-year-old occurred moments after that phone call, when a witness observed her through a window as she left the property. She subsequently disappeared, leaving behind no immediate trace and sparking an extensive, multi-year investigation by county detectives.
As federal and local personnel continue to process the grounds and the underground structure in Leonidas Township, authorities maintain that all credible information will continue to be methodically evaluated. The collaborative search off Onley Road highlights the sustained commitment of local and federal investigators to uncover the truth behind Shank’s 2018 disappearance.
