Indiana Prosecutor Declines Charges in Unfounded Child Abuse Report Targeting Pete Buttigieg's Family

A woman who made a fabricated child abuse allegation that brought law enforcement and child welfare personnel to the home of former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg will not face criminal prosecution. Authorities confirmed that no criminal charges will be filed following a review of the incident, which temporarily forced the former cabinet official to be separated from his young children.

The decision stems from an assessment by Marshall County Prosecutor E. Nelson Chipman Jr. in Indiana. According to official correspondence, Chipman determined that prosecutors could not legally establish that the caller acted with the requisite criminal intent to knowingly provide a false report to child protective authorities.

In an explanation provided in a July 29 communication to the Indiana State Police, the prosecutor pointed to the woman’s severe history of alcohol misuse, persistent auditory hallucinations, and delusional thought processes. These debilitating mental health factors meant the state could not prove she possessed the deliberate mindset necessary to sustain criminal charges for the false claim.

Public records identify the individual responsible for the report only by the initials "TJ." Officials noted that the Alabama resident was visiting relatives in Indiana at the time she contacted authorities to make the unsubstantiated claims against the Buttigieg household, before subsequently returning to her home state.

According to investigative findings, the caller exhibited severe behavioral disruptions and responded to voices that were not present while expressing grandiose delusions. During her brief stay in Indiana, she had at least three separate interactions with local law enforcement, including an incident that resulted in her arrest on a domestic battery allegation, during which testing revealed a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.32 percent.

The unvetted allegation had immediate and severe consequences for the Buttigieg household in Michigan. The complaint triggered an intrusive response that brought a Michigan State Police officer alongside a Child Protective Services caseworker directly to the family's residence to initiate an investigation.

Under the protocols enforced by the responding officials, Pete Buttigieg was barred from being left alone with his and his husband Chasten Buttigieg’s 4-year-old twins. To comply with the directive, the couple arranged for the children to spend the night under the care of Chasten’s parents until required investigative procedures could be carried out.

The following day, child welfare personnel conducted separate forensic interviews with both 4-year-old children without their parents present in the room. Pete Buttigieg later described the harrowing 24-hour ordeal as being among the darkest hours of his life, having characterized the underlying complaint as a cruel and politically motivated hoax designed to disrupt his family.

Following their inquiry, the Michigan State Police directly confirmed that investigators determined the accusation was entirely unfounded. In addressing the matter, state police officials emphasized the severe collateral harm caused by false claims, warning that such fabricated allegations divert crucial law enforcement and child welfare personnel away from genuine emergencies involving vulnerable children.

Subsequent reviews of official records revealed a profound operational breakdown between cross-state agencies. Indiana child welfare personnel had transferred the raw complaint to Michigan authorities without attaching the caller’s identity or providing any direct contact information to verify her claims.

Compounding the inter-agency failure, Michigan law enforcement officials waited six days after making in-person contact with the Buttigiegs before taking formal steps to track down and identify the origin of the complaint. Child welfare specialists who analyzed the procedural documentation observed that a critical lack of communication and poor professional judgment across state lines unnecessarily escalated the intervention.

The mishandling of the complaint has prompted formal oversight. The Michigan Attorney General’s office launched an active investigation into both the false claim itself and the systemic lapses in how the respective agencies processed and acted upon the unverified report, with officials confirming the inquiry remains open.

The incident underscores the ongoing public pressures surrounding Pete and Chasten Buttigieg, whose home life and marriage have frequently been thrust into political discourse by conservative figures. The family had previously faced sharp commentary from critics in 2021 when Pete Buttigieg took parental leave to assist in caring for the couple's prematurely born newborn twins.

While a representative for the Buttigieg family declined to issue a new statement regarding the prosecutor’s choice not to pursue charges, the family has previously emphasized the necessity of obtaining full accountability and comprehensive answers regarding how an unsubstantiated report was permitted to disrupt their home.
