The Iberville Parish School Board has formally launched its candidate evaluation process to determine who will serve as the school district's next superintendent. Over the course of two evenings, school board members conducted in-depth interviews with five hopefuls who submitted applications for the chief executive leadership post.

The formal candidate discussions were held across Tuesday and Wednesday evenings of the previous week. While the initial round of conversations has concluded, school board officials confirmed that no immediate decision has been finalized regarding which applicant will ultimately be selected to take over the district's top administrative role.

School board members have not yet indicated whether they plan to invite the candidates back for a second series of formal interviews. Board leadership noted that the initial interview sessions were comprehensive and extended over considerable periods of time as trustees thoroughly questioned each contender.

The newly chosen administrative leader will eventually step into the role being vacated by current Superintendent Dr. Louis Voiron. Earlier this year, Dr. Voiron publicly announced his plans to retire from the post when his existing district employment contract officially concludes on June 30, 2027.

The recruitment process yielded five qualified contenders seeking the top administrative role. The school board split the candidate reviews across two separate sessions to ensure adequate time to examine each applicant’s platform, leadership philosophy, and professional background.

During the first evening of candidate reviews on Tuesday, board members conducted interviews with Rebecca Johnson, Laura Roussel, and Dr. Emily Martin. The trustees utilized the session to review each applicant's vision for the local school system and their specific approaches to district governance.

The interview process continued the following evening with the remaining two contenders. Dr. Clarence Robinson and She-Keitra Matthews appeared before the school board on Wednesday night to present their respective qualifications and field questions from the sitting board members.

The applicant pool features a blend of both familiar internal figures and educators from outside the parish. Both Johnson and Dr. Martin currently work within the Iberville Parish School System, providing the board with candidates who possess direct knowledge of the district’s existing staff, students, and operational routines.

The external candidates bring experience from varied regions across south Louisiana. One applicant is currently employed in Jefferson Parish while maintaining a residence in Ascension Parish, another candidate commutes to New Orleans from Clinton, and a third contender resides in the Houma and Thibodaux area.

School Board President Mario Migliaccio acknowledged that he had initially anticipated receiving a greater number of submissions for the superintendent vacancy. However, Migliaccio explained that the timing of the search likely influenced the size of the applicant pool, particularly since the academic school year had already commenced by the time the search was underway.

Migliaccio also identified governance transitions as an additional factor that may have shaped candidate interest. A majority of the sitting Iberville Parish school board members are barred from seeking reelection due to established term limits, creating future political turnover that can often make leadership applicants hesitant. Migliaccio noted that numerous other school districts throughout Louisiana are encountering comparable dynamics.

The contractual terms established for the position may have also served as a consideration for prospective applicants. The district is offering a two-year employment agreement, a timeframe that provides the governing board with greater oversight and administrative leverage but presents a shorter initial commitment for an incoming superintendent.

Evaluating the strengths of the candidate field, Migliaccio observed that the applicants brought differing levels of professional experience to the table. Despite those differences in background, he noted that the board heard insightful perspectives from compelling applicants who offered meaningful responses regarding district issues.

To facilitate the board's upcoming deliberations, Migliaccio outlined a structured evaluation process for reviewing candidate performances. He indicated plans to compile written notes highlighting the notable strengths as well as any reservations regarding specific ideas or answers from the sessions, encouraging his fellow board members to prepare similar written assessments.

Migliaccio stressed that the final determination will not be driven by personal favoritism among board members. Instead, the ultimate selection will center on which leader can best serve the interests of the student population, drive meaningful educational progress across the district, and positively support local families and the wider community as the board weighs whether to hold another interview round or move directly to an appointment.
