Fresno Family Demands Justice After 19-Year-Old Woman Is Killed in Suspected Foothill DUI Crash

A Fresno family is demanding accountability and grappling with intense grief following the death of a 19-year-old woman in a suspected driving-under-the-influence collision in the foothill area near Shaver Lake. The tragic incident claimed the life of Arianna Perez, leaving her loved ones searching for answers as law enforcement authorities move forward with criminal charges against the individual behind the wheel.

According to reports from the California Highway Patrol, the fatal wreck occurred along Highway 168, near the intersection with Littlefield Road. Investigators stated that the vehicle veered off the mountain roadway before plummeting roughly 60 feet down a steep cliffside, resulting in catastrophic damage upon impact.

Law enforcement officials identified the driver of the vehicle as 32-year-old Ricardo Arceo-Tapia. Crash investigators determined that there was probable cause to believe Arceo-Tapia was operating the car while under the influence of intoxicating substances at the moment it left the asphalt. Family members later noted that the driver was an acquaintance of both Perez and her boyfriend.

Three people were inside the vehicle when it careened down the embankment. While Arceo-Tapia and Perez’s boyfriend survived the severe fall, Perez suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. California Highway Patrol officers noted in their preliminary findings that the 19-year-old had not been wearing a seat belt during the trip.

David Jimenez, Perez’s boyfriend who survived the wreck, shared his heartbreaking recollection of the immediate aftermath. He described the overwhelming wave of disbelief and shock that washed over him upon discovering that his partner had not survived the devastating descent, recalling the immense numbness and the painful moment when reality set in.

The sudden and preventable nature of the loss has devastated Perez’s immediate family, who are struggling to comprehend a future without her vibrant presence. Her father, Anthony Perez, voiced the profound agony of facing an unnatural order of life, emphasizing that parents should never have to endure the sorrow of burying their own children.

Perez’s sister, Amiryes Perez, shared the agonizing reality of milestones that the sisters will never get to experience together. Reflecting on their shared upbringing and deep bond, she lamented that Arianna will not be present to celebrate upcoming life events, including her 18th birthday or high school graduation, expressing that seventeen years alongside her sister was far from enough time.

Those close to the teenager remembered Arianna—affectionately known by family as "Nana"—as an adventurous, generous, and bright spirit who approached life with enthusiasm. Her sister recalled how much she loved exploring the outdoors, spending peaceful afternoons along the coastline, and searching the shoreline for sand dollars, characterizing her as an individual who was exceptionally open, lively, and warmhearted.

As the family continues to mourn, the legal case against Arceo-Tapia has begun moving through the judicial system. The defendant recently made his initial appearance in court to face criminal allegations related to the crash. However, the proceedings were briefly paused, and his formal arraignment was delayed by a week to give him adequate time to retain private legal representation.

Court records have introduced further outrage into the case, revealing that Arceo-Tapia was already serving an active term of probation for a separate driving-under-the-influence conviction. Public records indicate that this previous conviction had been handed down less than a single month prior to the fatal Shaver Lake incident, raising serious concerns regarding repeat offenses and enforcement.

Perez’s relatives confirmed that they had been completely unaware of the suspect's recent legal troubles and prior DUI record before the collision. The revelation that the driver was already on probation has amplified their anger and determination, steeling their resolve to ensure that the justice system pursues full accountability for the actions that led to Arianna’s untimely death.

The tragedy highlights the persistent dangers and devastating consequences associated with impaired driving on winding foothill corridors like Highway 168. Community members and road safety advocates frequently emphasize that driving under the influence puts every passenger and motorist at extreme risk, often leaving innocent families to shoulder the lifelong emotional toll of preventable decisions.

Arceo-Tapia remains scheduled to appear before a judge in the coming week to proceed with his formal arraignment, where plea entries and the full scope of charges will be addressed. Perez’s family members have affirmed their intent to closely monitor the court proceedings, demanding that the legal system deliver a just outcome in honor of Arianna's memory.

To assist with the unexpected financial burden brought on by the sudden loss, the victim's loved ones have organized an online GoFundMe campaign. The funds collected through the memorial drive are designated to help cover funeral arrangements and memorial expenses as the Fresno family prepares to bid a final farewell to Arianna.
