Dozens of North Jersey High Schools Earn National Recognition with Prestigious Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

Secondary schools throughout Northern New Jersey are celebrating significant scholastic achievements after dozens of local campuses secured representation in the highly regarded National Merit Scholarship competition. More than 50 high schools across the northern region of the state produced qualifying students, solidifying the area's standing as a prominent hub for academic distinction.

Across the entire state of New Jersey, secondary educational institutions situated in nearly 95 different municipalities saw their upperclassmen officially recognized in the competition. Bergen County displayed a particularly concentrated level of achievement, with high schools spanning 20 separate municipalities within the county placing talented students onto the program’s distinguished roster.

The comprehensive directory of honorees was released on Thursday, September 9, by the Illinois-based National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Operating as an independent, non-profit organization, the foundation annually assesses high-achieving high schoolers across the United States to identify those who demonstrate superior academic capability, standardized testing prowess, and comprehensive classroom dedication.

Among the most successful institutions in the region was Bergen County Academies, situated in Hackensack. Known as a specialized public high school dedicated to serving gifted and academically driven students, the county magnet institution stood out near the very top of statewide rankings by producing 24 individual semifinalists in this year’s evaluation cycle.

Academic success was widely distributed across neighboring districts as well, particularly within Essex County. Millburn High School demonstrated exceptional performance by securing semifinalist honors for 20 of its students. Similarly, Livingston High School established a significant presence on the state honor roll, celebrating 17 students who advanced into the semifinalist tier.

Several other prominent school systems in Bergen County registered impressive numbers among the qualifying cohort. Districts making strong showings included Ridgewood High School, Tenafly High School, and Bergen County Technical High School's campus in Teterboro, all of which contributed meaningful numbers of scholars to the prestigious statewide tally.

On a broader scale, the competition encompasses an enormous pool of scholastic talent spanning all fifty states. A total of approximately 16,000 high school seniors from both public and private secondary institutions across the country qualified for the 2027 list, representing an elite, highly selective segment of the nation’s overall graduating class.

For the thousands of students who have secured semifinalist status, this milestone marks an essential gateway rather than the finish line. These semifinalists are now positioned to advance into the next phase of the program, where they will compete for a significantly more selective pool of academic scholarships and the coveted permanent designation of Merit Scholar.

The strong footprint of New Jersey schools across nearly 100 individual towns and cities highlights the broad geographic spread of educational achievement throughout the state. From suburban school districts to specialized county-wide educational systems, local educators and administrators continue to support learning environments that prepare students to meet rigorous national evaluation benchmarks.

The remarkable showing by magnet programs like Bergen County Academies and Bergen County Technical High School in Teterboro underscores the enduring value of public specialized academies. These institutions provide targeted curricula for advanced learners, enabling students to pursue intensive coursework that translates directly into exceptional results on national standardized metrics.

At the same time, the substantial representations from comprehensive public secondary schools—such as Millburn, Livingston, Ridgewood, and Tenafly—showcase the academic depth present within traditional local school systems. These community high schools continue to foster high academic standards, providing comprehensive educational experiences that rival specialized institutions on the national stage.

Schools across the region have long cultivated cultures of broad student involvement alongside academic excellence. At campuses such as Ridgewood High School, overseen by leaders including Principal Jeffrey Nyhuis, students balance intensive scholastic commitments with active participation in community traditions and milestone events, ranging from musical and sign-language presentations to commencement celebrations.

Earning inclusion in the National Merit Scholarship program carries substantial implications for the academic futures of these North Jersey students. In addition to national prestige, qualifying candidates gain access to vital undergraduate financial assistance through corporate sponsorships, college-sponsored awards, and direct National Merit scholarships, providing crucial momentum as they prepare for higher education.

As the National Merit Scholarship Corporation moves closer to determining its final slate of winners, high schools across Northern New Jersey continue to commend their semifinalists. With more than 50 local schools represented, the 2027 semifinalist class reflects the ongoing dedication of the region's students, teachers, and school districts in pursuing educational excellence.
