Community Fundraisers, Live Arts, and Entertainment Headline Full Slate of Freeport Area Events

Residents across the greater Freeport area are preparing for a vibrant schedule of community gatherings, charity fundraisers, athletic tournaments, and live performances. The upcoming roster of regional events spans multiple venues across Stephenson County and neighboring areas, providing local patrons with diverse recreational and cultural options ranging from animal welfare benefits to competitive martial arts and historical reenactments.

Community support initiatives begin at Lincoln Mall in Freeport, where VOICES of Stephenson County is holding its annual Fall Mum Sale. The multi-day fundraising drive features a selection of roughly 1,000 autumn mums in red, orange, white, yellow, and purple hues, priced at $13 per plant. Operating from the first storefront on the right at 1255 W. Galena Ave., the sale directs all proceeds toward essential intervention and support services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse. The sale welcomes shoppers from noon to 5 p.m. on Sept. 9, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sept. 10, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 11, with musical accompaniment provided by Ukulele Express on the opening afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m.

Sports enthusiasts seeking high-intensity athletic competition will find regional action at the Hard Rock Casino Rockford, located at 7801 E. State St. The developmental mixed martial arts promotion Cage Fury Fighting Championships presents "CFFC 161: Aladi vs. Lleshi," featuring reigning interim flyweight titleholder Moshe "Straw Hat" Aladi defending his crown against former NextGen champion Jerry Lleshi. Established in 2006, the organization has long served as a prominent proving ground for top-tier combat sports athletes. Doors open at 5 p.m. on Sept. 11 ahead of a 6 p.m. start time, with admission priced at $99.95.

Live music options abound throughout Friday evening across Stephenson County's surrounding communities. Acoustic performer Kristin Toon is scheduled to play an open-air outdoor set on the patio at Route 75 Bar & Grill, situated at 320 E. Main St. in Dakota. The acoustic session will run from 7 to 10 p.m. on Sept. 11, offering an intimate musical backdrop for patrons in the downtown district.

Simultaneously in Lena, RAMI award-winning musical group Blue Steel will take the stage at Lena Brewing Company, located at 9426 W. Wagner Road. Scheduled for an 8 p.m. performance on Sept. 11, the ensemble blends country and rock sensibilities characterized by dual male and female lead vocals reinforced by intricate three-part vocal harmonies.

Fundraising efforts shift toward companion animals on Saturday morning with the staging of the Bruce Nielsen Memorial Car Show at Friends Forever Humane Society, located at 966 W. Rudy Road in Freeport. Running rain or shine from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 12, the family-friendly vehicle exhibition benefits shelter operations and includes Top 40 competition awards, raffles, door prizes, food, and music. Educational and ceremonial presentations will be delivered throughout the day by the Stephenson County K9 Unit, High Flying Huskies, Freeport ROTC, and Operation Fallen Flag. Spectator admission is free, while vehicle registrations cost $10 in advance and $15 at the gate, with leashed dogs welcomed.

Golfers will also hit the greens on Saturday morning for the Tee off on Crime 2026 outing at The Freeport Club, situated at 1614 S. Park Blvd. Running from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 12, the $125 tournament registration covers 18 holes of golf with cart access, a Bloody Mary bar, lunch, and specialty pizza tastings courtesy of the Wood Pellet Pizza Oven Company. The event features distinctive course challenges, including the Gahm Enterprises Golf Ball Launcher and Crime Scene Bunkers, alongside community sponsorship opportunities such as the "Sponsor a Cop" initiative.

Promoting youth literacy and community companionship, the Freeport Public Library at 100 E. Douglas St. hosts its PAWS to Read initiative on Sept. 12 from 11 a.m. to noon. The weekend educational program invites young community members to practice their reading skills in a welcoming setting by reading selected stories aloud to certified therapy dogs from Therapy Dogs International.

Civic arts and heritage take center stage Saturday evening during "Freedom on the Rocks: A Celebration of United We Create," held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Freeport Arts Plaza at 111 E. Douglas St. Commemorating the America at 250 milestone, the festive gathering features the formal unveiling of the United We Create Mural alongside the presentation of the region's annual Cultural Leadership Awards.

The $50 benefit evening at the arts plaza includes a full-service cash bar, an all-American cookout prepared by Marketside Meats & Deli, baked desserts from Bezzie's Bakery, and live arrangements performed by the Highland Community College Big Band. Event revenue directly finances operations at the Freeport Art Museum, sustaining its commitment to offering free daily gallery admission and hands-on artistic workshops for patrons of all ages.

Regional comedy entertainment continues later that evening as television personality and comedian Jonathan Van Ness performs a stand-up set at the Hard Rock Casino Rockford. Scheduled for 8 p.m. on Sept. 12 with doors opening at 7 p.m., the 21-and-over performance blends comedic commentary on culture and queer joy, with ticket prices ranging from $42 to $66 for general admission seating.

Saturday evening’s entertainment lineup concludes in Davis, where rock cover ensemble Fast Lane performs at the Best Dam Bar, located at 13965 Best Road. The high-energy live music showcase runs from 8 p.m. to midnight on Sept. 12, giving nightlife patrons an extended set of rock favorites.

Looking ahead to the following week, historical education takes the spotlight as the Galena-based reenactment group Women of Courage & Commitment presents "Women of Courage: World War I." The educational presentation explores the wartime lives and contributions of historical figures Emma Goldman, Edith Cavell, Gertrude Bell, and Mata Hari through researched narrative storytelling. Scheduled from 2 to 3:30 p.m., the limited-capacity session strongly recommends advance participant registration.

Together, these varied gatherings reflect the diverse civic, charitable, and recreational fabric of the Freeport region, giving area residents numerous opportunities to support local causes, enjoy live performance arts, and connect with their surrounding communities.
