Clatsop County residents and coastal commuters are preparing for a busy stretch in mid-September, marked by vital infrastructure maintenance projects, civic engagement opportunities, and specialized collegiate athletic activities. Regional authorities and community groups have released operational schedules detailing highway pavement preservation on two heavily traveled corridors, an informational forum on a local ballot initiative, and brief water restrictions at a county park.

State transportation authorities are gearing up to execute targeted roadway resurfacing designed to rehabilitate damaged driving surfaces on sections of U.S. Highway 101 and U.S. Highway 30. According to bulletins issued by the Oregon Department of Transportation, maintenance crews will focus on eliminating road surface ruts, potholes, and structural cracks, with the ultimate objective of providing a smoother, safer ride for everyday motorists.

The initial phase of highway maintenance will take place within the Seaside area along U.S. 101. Work crews are scheduled to begin localized pavement repairs on Monday, Sept. 14, and will continue their tasks through Tuesday, Sept. 15. The designated construction zone covers the roadway between 12th Street and 16th Street near milepost 20, with operational hours scheduled from approximately 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on both days.

Motorists traveling through Seaside along this stretch should prepare for modified traffic patterns, travel delays, and possible vehicular backups. Transportation officials emphasized that lane shifts will be active during working hours, advising drivers to allot additional travel time and maintain heightened focus while road crews restore the deteriorating asphalt across the two-day period.

Later in the week, highway maintenance operations will transition to the east end of Astoria along U.S. 30. Starting Thursday, Sept. 17, and running through Friday, Sept. 18, highway crews will conduct essential surface paving between 33rd Street and 16th Street, spanning mileposts 97 to 98. Operating hours will mirror the earlier Seaside project, taking place between 6 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. each day.

State officials noted that managing traffic along U.S. 30 in Astoria involves greater operational complexity due to the presence of multiple intersections, electronic signals, and diverse roadside features. Consequently, travelers must prepare for daytime lane closures and follow direct guidance from on-site flaggers who will be orchestrating vehicle flow through the congested work zone.

To safeguard road crews and the traveling public, transportation officials urge all motorists to reduce their driving speeds, remain vigilant around heavy machinery, and adhere strictly to flagger directions. Transportation planners also noted that all scheduled road preservation work is weather dependent and subject to operational delays or calendar revisions should adverse conditions arise.

Beyond highway updates, Astoria community members will have an opportunity to engage directly with local policy matters affecting the region. The Astoria Housing Initiative has scheduled an open campaign event aimed at fostering voter awareness surrounding an upcoming local ballot proposal ahead of the general election.

The organization is slated to host a public campaign social on Tuesday, Sept. 15, running from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. inside the Astoria Armory. The gathering will focus on Measure 4-247, an initiative that will be decided by municipal voters on the November ballot.

Organizers stated that the informational session is intended to ensure local voters have access to reliable facts before making their decisions. Campaign representatives plan to be on hand to field questions from the public, assist undecided residents, and discuss the initiative's details over light refreshments.

Recreational visitors at Cullaby Lake will also encounter temporary scheduling adjustments during the same week. Clatsop County officials announced that certain lake amenities will temporarily close to general public use to make room for a dedicated university athletic event.

Both the lake waters and the boat launching ramp will be closed on Friday, Sept. 18, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., as well as on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 9 a.m. until noon. The brief closures will accommodate a special training and competitive event hosted by the Oregon State University Rowing Team.

Despite the suspension of watercraft activity, the surrounding county park will remain accessible to the community throughout both days. Spectators are welcome to view the rowing team exercises from the shoreline at no cost, and standard land amenities, including picnic grounds, will remain available for regular use.

For community members intrigued by the sport, the weekend program includes an educational component open to the public. Organizers announced that individuals interested in learning foundational rowing techniques will have the chance to participate during the Saturday morning session.

While watching the rowing activities is free of charge, standard park entry rules apply, including the routine $5 day-use parking fee for county park visitors. Residents seeking additional details regarding the park schedule, traffic updates, or local public notices are encouraged to consult the county’s official portal at clatsopcounty.gov.
