A police investigation is underway on Chicago’s South Side after a 12-year-old student discharged a firearm found inside an unattended bag on a school bus parked outside an elementary campus on Monday afternoon. The incident, which resulted in a shattered window but no physical injuries, has heightened safety concerns among parents, school officials, and neighborhood residents.
The frightening sequence of events unfolded just before 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of West 35th and South Wallace streets in the city’s Bridgeport neighborhood. The school bus was positioned outside Minnie Miñoso Academy during the routine afternoon dismissal period as children were preparing to travel home for the day.
According to statements released by the Chicago Police Department, the situation began when an unidentified adult male left a bag unattended outside the academy near the bus. The presence of the unmonitored bag went unresolved long enough for a child to access its contents.
Investigators reported that a 12-year-old boy located the abandoned bag, looked inside, and discovered a firearm. While handling the weapon inside the school bus, the child pulled the trigger and fired a single live round.
The discharged bullet struck and shattered one of the passenger windows on the school bus. Despite the severe danger of a gunshot being fired within the confines of an occupied student transport vehicle, officials confirmed that neither the child who handled the gun nor any other students or bystanders were injured by the gunfire or the resulting broken glass.
Immediately following the gunshot, the unidentified man who had originally left the bag returned to the vehicle, retrieved both the firearm and the carrying bag, and quickly fled the scene on foot.
Law enforcement officials have not yet released a detailed physical description of the man, nor have they publicly established his identity. Chicago police stated that it remains unclear what connection, if any, the individual has to the school, the student body, or the third-party transportation provider operating the bus route.
The swift deployment of emergency personnel and marked squad vehicles drew immediate concern from local workers and community members who witnessed the aftermath of the shooting in what is typically a quiet residential and commercial corridor.
Miguel Lozano, who works in the immediate vicinity of the Bridgeport school, noted that the sudden surge of first responders was unmistakable. He remarked that observing far more police activity than normal in the area immediately raised urgent community questions regarding how a deadly weapon could be left accessible to children outside a school.
Detectives from the Chicago Police Department’s area investigative unit have launched a comprehensive inquiry into the episode. Law enforcement personnel are collaborating directly with the Chicago Public Schools Office of Safety and Security to review security protocols, evaluate bus oversight, and trace the movements of the suspect before and after the discharge.
Following the close call, the principal of Minnie Miñoso Academy issued a formal written notice to families and guardians to provide an official account of the dismissal incident and ease growing parental anxieties.
In the letter, the principal affirmed that student protection remains the administrative team's highest priority, confirming directly that a shot had been fired from inside a vehicle transporting students from the campus and that a bus window had sustained damage from the impact.
School leadership sought to reassure parents by emphasizing that all students were accounted for and completely safe. The principal stressed that at no point did the firearm enter the interior of the physical school building or cross into the main school grounds, remaining confined strictly to the exterior transportation area.
Addressing the limited disclosure of student specifics, the principal noted that federal and district privacy rules prevent the administration from releasing sensitive personal details regarding the youth involved or specific disciplinary steps. However, the message assured parents that the district treats any weapon-related incident with the utmost gravity.
The communication concluded with a plea to the entire school community, urging parents, guardians, and neighbors to report any potential safety hazards or suspicious behaviors immediately to school staff or law enforcement so that preventative measures can be enacted before children are placed in danger.
Authorities have not announced any arrests in connection with the shooting, and no further details regarding the firearm model or the suspect's direction of flight have been made public. Area detectives continue to investigate the matter as they work to identify and apprehend the man responsible for bringing the unsecured gun to the school perimeter.
