California Pageant Titleholder Faces Lengthy Recovery After Being Struck by Vehicle Driven by Young Children

A 31-year-old California woman and aspiring attorney is embarking on a grueling, multi-year recovery process after suffering severe brain trauma and extensive bodily injuries when she was struck by a vehicle driven by two young boys in Oakland.

The collision occurred on the morning of Aug. 6 around 9:30 a.m. while Kiara Bowling was walking her friend’s dog, Grizzly. According to family accounts, Bowling was navigating a pedestrian crosswalk when a vehicle struck her from behind, causing life-threatening physical trauma and wiping away her recollection of the incident.

Authorities from the Oakland Police Department reported that the vehicle involved was being operated by two brothers, aged 7 and 4. Prior to hitting Bowling, the car had sideswiped an oncoming vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. The vehicle then careened out of control and struck Bowling in the crosswalk. Emergency personnel transported Bowling to a regional hospital in critical condition, while the two young boys were admitted in stable condition.

According to Bowling’s aunt, Karon Markham, investigators explained that the young children managed to access the vehicle after quietly taking their parents' car keys while the adults were asleep. The brothers reportedly slipped out through a window of their residence before getting inside the automobile and driving it onto local streets.

The force of the impact inflicted a severe traumatic brain injury on Bowling, along with broken ribs and a facial fracture. The catastrophic head trauma has severely affected her cognitive processing and physical motor skills, stripping her of memories surrounding the crash and leaving her with significant amnesia.

Despite the grave nature of her condition, Bowling has recently reached key physical therapy milestones. Markham shared that the 31-year-old recently managed to take her first steps since being hospitalized. In addition, Bowling has regained the ability to swallow, allowing her to transition to solid foods, while engaging in basic cognitive exercises such as coloring and assembling puzzles.

However, Bowling continues to experience profound disorientation regarding the events of the collision. Her aunt noted that while Bowling is conscious that an incident occurred based on conversations around her, she remains confused about the details, at times believing children had stolen her own car before later stating they had taken their parents’ vehicle.

Bowling’s memory loss extends to personal family history, presenting painful dilemmas for her relatives. Bowling has repeatedly asked to see her mother and brother, unaware that both individuals passed away in recent years. Markham explained that the family has made the deliberate choice to withhold the news of their deaths for the time being, fearing that the emotional shock could impede her neurological rehabilitation.

Medical professionals have offered a cautious outlook regarding Bowling’s long-term independence. Her healthcare team, including a neuropsychologist scheduled to evaluate the full extent of her memory loss, indicated that a full recovery remains uncertain. Physicians have warned that rehabilitation will likely take years, with no guarantee that she will ever return to living completely independently.

Markham, whose mother helped raise Bowling and her siblings, expressed lingering frustration and confusion over how two young children were able to embark on such an excursion undetected. Investigators previously informed the family that they intended to extract data from the vehicle’s onboard black box to gain a clearer picture of the car’s operation and speed prior to the impact.

Oakland police have stated that the children's parents are cooperating with law enforcement inquiries into the crash. While investigators conveyed that the parents expressed a desire to speak directly with Bowling’s relatives, Markham explained that the family has been entirely consumed with attending to Kiara's critical medical needs and rehabilitation.

Before the life-altering crash, Bowling led an active, independent life in Oakland defined by academic ambition and community engagement. She held the title of Miss California Regency International 2026 and was preparing to conclude her reign in February. Over the summer, she finished an intensive virtual pre-law program through Harvard University, with aspirations of eventually practicing law.

Bowling had been on the verge of completing her undergraduate degree, with plans to finish her final semester at California State University, East Bay, this coming December. Having grown up in the foster care system, she had channeled her personal experiences into youth advocacy, actively working to support disadvantaged children. Moments before the crash, she had shared plans with her aunt to organize a back-to-school donation drive collecting backpacks and essential supplies.

To help manage the immense financial burden of Bowling’s ongoing hospitalization, specialized therapies, and long-term care, Markham has organized an online GoFundMe fundraiser. Relying on their faith, Bowling's family remains focused on supporting her day-to-day rehabilitation as she works to regain her strength, speech, and mobility.
